Jack Barnes grew up in Sacramento County before graduating from Saint Mary’s College of California in 2019 with a B.A. in Global Studies. After college he did a year of volunteer work with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Cleveland, OH where he served at the West Side Catholic Center, a social service agency that serves a predominantly homeless clientele. Jack split his time between the Workforce Development Program, teaching a job-readiness course, and the Expressive Arts Program, where he coordinated art-related activities free of charge to the Center’s clients. Jack’s work at the Catholic Center contributed to his belief in the primacy of housing as a determinant of health and social equity. Jack is looking forward to a second CivicSpark service year at the City of Elk Grove where he will see the Landlord Incentive Program continue to evolve and find more opportunities to increase access to housing for low-income households.
