For the last ten years, CivicSpark has helped over 300 communities in California, Washington, and Colorado accelerate their climate response while providing a launchpad for almost 1000 emerging leaders. In 2023, CivicSpark embarked on a national planning process to consider expanding into the Southeastern United States and Hawaii.

Program Design
CivicSpark recruits Fellows through a highly competitive application process. Fellows spend 11 months embedded in government agencies and community organizations, serving 1,300+ hours implementing a needed community resilience project, while also building long-term capacity to ensure the work is sustained after their service year. Fellows also develop leadership skills through participating in professional development and community service activities throughout the service year.
Expansion Timeline
- October 18: Partner application opens
- November – December: Partner and Fellow match process
- November 8: Partner application closes
- January 2025: CivicSpark program starts in expansion states
What We’re Hearing From Leaders in the Region:
Florida is in desperate need of capacity building for climate resilience. There is great coordination and mobilization around working groups and coalitions but the local governments are still lacking capacity and the ability to hire.
