City of Redmond Environmental Resiliency Fellow
Organization: City of Redmond Parks and Recreation Department
Openings: #1
Work Schedule: Hybrid, 3 days in office (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday)
Project Description:
Goals:
This project supports the City of Redmond Parks and Recreation Department and Environmental Sustainability Division in achieving 40 percent tree canopy coverage citywide and expanding equitable access to environmental stewardship opportunities. The Fellow will strengthen staff capacity to implement existing city plans, support community partnerships, and advance sustainable vegetation management practices. The project also builds capacity for outreach, volunteer coordination, youth programming, and potential grant research to support long-term funding needs.
Community Planning Needs and Priorities:
Community members identified healthy natural spaces and climate resilience as top priorities through the Comprehensive Plan and related environmental planning efforts. Redmond is currently losing approximately 13 acres of tree canopy per year due to growth and development, while nearly half of plantable land is privately owned. The project addresses the challenge of balancing growth with environmental protection by expanding tree planting on private property, increasing volunteer-led restoration in parks, and building youth environmental education programs. By strengthening partnerships with schools, businesses, and community organizations, this Fellowship helps the City respond to climate impacts, protect urban forests, and build long-term community stewardship capacity.
