Service Needs & PlansSpecific Agency/ies Served:
SBCCD is the primary agency served by this project. The district has ambitious sustainability goals, including carbon mitigation, energy conservation, and transparent sustainability practices. The project will address SBCCD’s need for technical expertise, data analysis, and practical solutions to advance its sustainability initiatives.
Environmental Challenges:
The project will focus on reducing carbon emissions and enhancing campus sustainability. It will address challenges related to energy conservation, water use efficiency, and sustainable procurement practices. This aligns with SBCCD’s goal to mitigate its carbon footprint, reduce waste, and improve resource efficiency.
Social Equity Challenges:
The project indirectly addresses social equity by promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility. It will work towards reducing the environmental impact of the college campuses, potentially leading to improved air quality and more accessible, affordable, and sustainable facilities, thereby contributing to a more equitable educational environment.
Overarching Goals:
To enhance the sustainability and resilience of SBCCD by assisting in the implementation of sustainability initiatives and technical analysis, reducing carbon emissions, and improving resource efficiency.
Role of the Fellow:
The Fellow will work closely with the SBCCD Facilities, Planning & Construction team and collaborate with District stakeholders and sustainability consultant Arup. Their role involves conducting technical analysis, such as greenhouse gas inventorying and co-benefit analysis, as well as providing recommendations for improving building energy efficiency, water use, waste patterns, sustainable procurement, and educational outreach. The Fellow will also work to engage and educate District stakeholders on sustainability strategies.
Desired Project Outcomes:
The project aims to develop various resources, including reports on greenhouse gas emissions, water use patterns, waste reduction recommendations, sustainable procurement practices, and educational materials on energy and sustainability topics. These resources will provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state of sustainability within SBCCD and offer actionable recommendations for improvement.
Resource Impact:
These resources will help increase SBCCD’s capacity to address the resilience challenges by providing data-driven insights and actionable recommendations and help our two campuses implement our new sustainability plan. The reports and educational materials the fellow will create will equip the district with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed decisions, reduce carbon emissions, enhance resource efficiency, and promote sustainable practices. This, in turn, will contribute to the long-term resilience of SBCCD and its ability to address environmental and social equity challenges.
College graduate with a data analysis and/or sustainability background preferred.
