The fellow will support efforts to prepare a Climate Action and Resiliency Plan for Union City, which will address issues including impacts of sea level rise and how Union City can plan for this. The document will address and plan for extreme weather events, drought, etc.
The fellow will assist Planning Division staff managing the consultant who will prepare the plan including reviewing draft documents, participating in check-in meetings, outreach related to the Plan, and support when the plan goes up for approvals.
The fellow will also attend regional Technical Advisory Meetings, sometimes with or without City staff, associated with Stopwaste.Org and AVA Community Energy on behalf of Union City. These meetings typically have a virtual component.
Project Description1. The overarching goals of the project are to update the City’s existing Climate Action Plan and add a resiliency component.
2. The fellow will assist Planning Division staff managing the consultant who will prepare the plan including reviewing draft documents, participating in check-in meetings, outreach related to the Plan, and support when the plan goes up for approvals.
As their schedule permits, the fellow will also attend regional Technical Advisory Meetings, sometimes with or without City staff, associated with Stopwaste.Org and AVA Community Energy on behalf of Union City. These meetings typically have a virtual component.
3. Desired project outcomes are an approved CAP and Resiliency Plan.
4. The Fellow will provide much needed support to support the consultant teams who are preparing the Plan, which will assist the City in addressing its Resiliency goals.
Desired SkillsCandidate who have experience working on Climate Action Plans, GHG Inventories, or Climate Resiliency Programs would be helpful to the project.

Community HighlightsUnion City is located in the East Bay, City Hall is walking distance from a BART station, which is the center of its new “downtown” district called the “Station District”. The Station District offers a variety of housing types, global palette of restaurants, and a large community park and several smaller parks. The diverse food options also extend into other commercial areas within the City. Union City is home to Union Landing, which is a large outdoor shopping center. Union City is a very diverse community with over 50 percent of is population categorized as Asian by the Census Bureau.
