Hybrid – We currently have one day a week in-office for collaboration days. However, there are other events or meetings outside of the in-office day the Fellow will be expected to attend in-person. The Fellow should have reliable transportation for in-person office days and in-person events.

Service Needs & Plans

The Transportation Division is dedicated to achieving the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP)’s ambitious goals to reduce transportation emissions by planning comfortable and accessible bikeways and sidewalks to encourage more walking and biking. The Transportation Planning Section within the Division has five staff that are working on multiple critical initiatives, including the Bike Parking Program, the Streets for People Plan, the 15-Minute Neighborhoods Plan, the Street Design Standards Amendment, the Howe Avenue Transportation and Vision Zero Plan, and the Norwood Avenue Complete Streets Plan. While these planning documents are an important foundation for securing grants to build these improvements, it is challenging to meaningfully engage all of Sacramento’s diverse neighborhoods.

Project Description

The Transportation Planning Fellow will support the community outreach and partner engagement efforts for the Streets for People Plan, the 15-Minute Neighborhoods Plan, the Street Design Standards Amendment, the Howe Avenue Transportation and Vision Zero Plan, and the Norwood Avenue Complete Streets Plan. These efforts may include in-person outreach at City events, as well as supporting virtual outreach through social media, newsletters, and more. Bilingual capabilities are desired to support more accessible and inclusive engagement.
The Fellow will have the opportunity to participate in and assist in project management related to the Streets for People Plan, the 15-Minute Neighborhoods Plan, the Street Design Standards Amendment, the Howe Avenue Transportation and Vision Zero Plan, or the Norwood Avenue Complete Streets Plan, particularly around planning for engagement events.
The Fellow will assist in identifying and processing bike parking throughout the City of Sacramento, with an emphasis in Opportunity Areas, to increase bike parking availability in Sacramento’s under resourced communities. This effort will include field work to identify bike parking near daily destinations, and preparing and submitting the needed documents for implementation.

Desired Skills

The ideal Fellow will be eager to learn more about Transportation Planning. The ideal Fellow will enjoy organizing and implementing outreach and educational events, have an ability to “translate” transportation topics into accessible and actionable information, and be able to work effectively individually or as part of a team. The ideal Fellow will have strong communication skills (verbal and written, including social media skills), organization skills, outreach and engagement experience, and project management skills. Bilingual capabilities are desired to support more accessible and inclusive engagement.

Organization & Workplace Highlights

Home to 500,000 residents and known as the City of Trees, the City of Sacramento has a long-standing commitment to foster sustainability in government operations and community activities. The Fellows will work within the Public Works Department. The Transportation Planning Section – a team of six within the Public Works Transportation Division – will host one Fellow focused on transportation planning outreach, both with City staff and the broader community. Both the Transportation Planning Section and the Office of Climate Action and Sustainability in Public Works include CivicSpark alumni! With this understanding of the fellowship, we support Fellows in pursuing career and personal development opportunities and will encourage this networking throughout the fellowship.
