Service Needs & Plans

1. Single-Use Plastic and Polystyrene Ordinance Implementation
The Single-Use Plastic and Polystyrene Ordinance Implementation will serve the Beverly Hills community, most notably impacting businesses/restaurants that use single-use plastics. Beverly Hills is planning to adopt this ordinance by Fall 2023. Extensive outreach, alternative supply preparation and early adopter programs will need to be implemented.

This project will address environmental challenges as we strive to reduce the use of plastics which is harmful to our environment.

2. Green Business Program
The Green Business Program serves the business community. Beverly Hills launched the Green Business Program in FY22/23. The Fellow will continue to recruit businesses and coordinate meetings with City staff and business for initial assessment and walk through the certification program.

This project will address environmental challenges as we strive to make every business sustainable by reducing energy use, reducing waste and promoting organics recycling amongst other initiatives.

3. Water Conservation Program

The City of Beverly Hills is continuing its water conservation effort affecting all City businesses and residents. Part of this effort is to develop policies through state and regional best practices and specific data to Beverly Hills. The Fellow will be assisting the City in developing water budget policies by assessing water consumption data. The Fellow will develop an implementation plan that includes customer outreach, reporting system and data system management.

This project will address water conservation as the City faces drought impacts.

Project Description

Single-Use Plastic and Polystyrene Ordinance Implementation

1. The overarching goal of this ordinance is to reduce plastic waste.
2. The fellow’s role is to assist with the implementation of the Single-Use Plastic and Polystyrene Ordinance by conducting extensive outreach, prepare alternative supplies for businesses, and adopt an early adopter program.
3. The project outcome is to have the ordinance successfully implemented.
4. The City of Beverly Hills currently does not have the staffing capacity to develop and implement the various sustainability initiatives being worked on. The fellow will help increase our capacity and work on implementing various programs in the community to continue with our sustainability efforts.

Green Business Program

1. The overarching goal of this program is to make businesses more sustainable.
2. The fellow’s role is to assist with business recruitment and coordinate meetings with staff and businesses for assessment.
3. Desired outcomes include a program with higher participation.
4. The City of Beverly Hills currently does not have the staffing capacity to develop and implement the various sustainability initiatives being worked on. The fellow will help increase our capacity and work on implementing various programs in the community to continue with our sustainability efforts.

Water Conservation Program
