Service Needs & Plans

The Fellow will be housed in the Environmental and Sustainability Division (ESD) in the Public Works Department. ESD is responsible for implementing the City’s stormwater pollution prevention program, Climate Action Plan 2030 and Beyond (CAP 2030) and solid waste and recycling programs. CAP 2030 establishes a goal for the City to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045 and includes quantified actions that the City will take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while experiencing significant growth in population. CAP 2030 includes key strategies that focus on Dublin’s largest emissions sources: buildings, transportation, and waste. The Fellow will assist with the implementation and community engagement around CAP measures and waste reduction, recycling, and composting. The Fellow will implement the City’s social media plan and outreach and engagement around the City’s sustainability initiatives. The Fellow will also assist with coordinating events and workshops related to Bike Month and Dublin Pride Week. It is likely there will also be CAP or waste related projects not listed in this description that the Fellow may have the opportunity to lead.

Project Description

Working with ESD staff and interacting with other City departments and partner agencies, the Fellow will gain exposure to project management from an interdisciplinary standpoint.

1) The Fellow will support the City in CAP implementation and conduct effective and meaningful community engagement and outreach around CAP measures and waste reduction and recycling.
2) The Fellow will conduct community engagement and encourage participation by Dublin residents and community groups to take sustainable actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions via a new web platform that the City will utilize, plan outreach and conduct community engagement around a new existing building efficiency and electrification plan, and also conduct outreach and education on waste reduction and recycling, including assessment of composting and recycling receptacle needs at city facilities and parks and outreach and assistance to restaurants and/or other establishments (e.g. schools) related to reducing single use food serviceware and other disposables.
3) The Fellow will (a) develop an outreach plan to increase community engagement around the CAP with the new web platform and set goals and track progress for household and community group participation in the platform (b) create and implement an outreach plan for community engagement around existing building efficiency and electrification, and (c) assist with providing leads for potential businesses to transition to reusable food serviceware and develop and implement a plan to follow up with businesses after they complete their transition to reusables.
4) The projects listed above are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Dublin and increase the City’s resilience and adaption to recover quickly from or reduce the impact of severe weather like extreme heat, drought, and other hazards.

Desired Skills

The ideal Fellow will be outgoing, well spoken, and excited to motivate the community around climate action and sustainability. The Fellow will have knowledge and skills in stakeholder engagement, public speaking, professional writing, and have a good attention to detail. The Fellow should also be comfortable working somewhat independently with limited guidance, be motivated, and take ownership of their work. The Fellow should be flexible and have a willingness/ability to try to figure out how to approach a project from start to finish.

Organization & Community Highlights

The City of Dublin is a suburban community in eastern Alameda County, approximately 35 miles southeast of San Francisco. Relatively affordable housing (for the Bay Area), a low crime rate, and award winning schools make Dublin a great community in which to live and work. Dublin prides itself on its parks and recreational opportunities. Two local rapid transit stations (BART) connect Dublin with the rest of the Bay Area.
